About the artist ...

Domingo Talldog Monroe is an award winning jewelry artist of the Narragansett Indian Tribe.  He works primarily with wampum and sterling silver, but also incorporates a variety of semi-precious stones and other metals in his pieces.  The result of his endeavors are one-of-a-kind works of art that never fail to get noticed.  Domingo's interest in making jewelry started over 25 years ago when his grandfather first showed him how to make necklaces from the shells of quahog clams.  Since then, Domingo has earned a reputation for fine quality craftsmanship and recognition for his beautiful jewelry.  Trained as a professional jewelry model maker, Domingo is able to create his own designs from beginning to end.  He cuts, carves, and polishes his own wampum and does his own metalwork as well.  He proudly signs his work and gives titles to many of his creations.  The time and effort he puts into his craft is apparent in the beauty and quality that results.  By pursuing his art, he has also helped preserve the tradition of wampum making that has sadly become a victim of mass production in the U.S. and overseas.

About wampum jewelry ...

Wampum is made from the quahog clam shell indigenous to New England.  It was used by the Native Americans of the East Coast in ceremonies, as adornment, and as a medium of exchange.  The deep purple section of the shell is known as "sacki", and had double the value of the "wompi", the white section.  Wampum became known as the badge of wealth and position, and is most noted for its role in the historic treaty belts of the Iroquois which told of tribal history and agreements with the United States.  If one carried wampum, it was believed to be a passport to the spirit world.
